Curtis students get creative for pumpkin decorating contest

Students at Lizzie Curtis Elementary pushed their creativity to the limits for their school’s pumpkin decorating contest.

The theme of the contest was “My Favorite Storybook Character.” Students decorated pumpkins at home as their favorite storybook character and brought them to the library to be displayed. Throughout the school week, classrooms visited the library to cast their votes for the best pumpkin.

“Our students and families are so wonderfully creative,” said Jenni Hatfield, librarian at Curtis. “Their hard work can definitely be seen in the unique and fun ways they completed the challenge.”

On October 26, the winners were announced, and their pumpkins were displayed at the PTA-hosted Trunk or Treat.

First-grade student Calla Montgomery was the overall winner for the contest with her pumpkin decorated for the book “The Good Egg” by Jory John. She went above and beyond to craft a cardboard fridge for her pumpkin to sit in.

Every grade level also recognized their top winners. Lily Harman placed first in fifth grade with her pumpkin decorated for the book “Smile” by Raina Telgemeier. Shannon Scheid was the fourth-grade winner with her pumpkin decorated for the book “The Tiger Rising” by Kate DiCamillo. In third grade, Benjamin Hatfield placed first with his pumpkin decorated for “The Imposter’s Guide to Among Us” by Kevin Pettman. In second grade, Liam Kennedy placed first with his “Dog Man” pumpkin, inspired by the book by Dav Pilkey. Finally, Taeya Mendez was the pre-k/kindergarten winner with her pumpkin decorated for “The Nightmare Before Christmas.”
